KeyGuide

A keyboard overlay that teaches the shortcuts you can press right now in Vim, Blender and AeroSpace, explained by a local open-weight AI.

KeyGuide helps you learn keyboard shortcuts. My older keyboard-overlay app with a local LLM added: hover any key and a small open-weight model explains when and why you’d use that shortcut.

Easy improvements: support for more apps (each app is just another keymap feeding the same overlay and AI tips), reading your own Zed and Neovim keymaps, and a quiz mode.

Works now with Vim keys in Zed and Neovim (Ghostty), Blender, and AeroSpace (read from your own config). Tips run locally with Qwen 3.5 4B through Ollama, with gpt-oss-120b on DigitalOcean as an option, and any tip that names a shortcut you don’t have is rejected. On an M1 Pro: 81 AeroSpace tips in 73 s, 564 Vim tips in about 8 minutes.

KeyGuide is GPLv3 and runs open-weight models: Qwen 3.5 4B locally via Ollama, or gpt-oss-120b on DigitalOcean. It checks every generated tip against the user's real keymap, rejecting any tip that names a shortcut that doesn't exist, and exports Markdown study guides.

KeyGuide fuses the keymaps of the tools I use daily (Vim keys in Zed and Neovim, Blender and the AeroSpace window manager) into one live overlay that follows the focused app and mode. It also adds a local open-weight AI tutor that explains each shortcut.
