RepoMentor — Your AI-Powered Open Source Contribution Guide
RepoMentor is an AI-powered platform designed to make contributing to open-source projects easier and more accessible, especially for developers who are looking for their first contribution.
Finding a suitable issue in a large codebase can be challenging. Developers often struggle to understand unfamiliar architectures, identify which issues match their skills, and figure out where to start.
RepoMentor addresses this problem by combining GitHub’s API with Google’s Gemma 4, using AI to analyze public repositories, explore their architecture, evaluate open issues, and generate contextual contribution guides.
Users can register any public GitHub repository, browse its open issues, and request AI-powered analysis with explanations of the issue’s complexity, relevant parts of the codebase, suggested investigation paths, and practical next steps.
The project uses Gemma 4 deployed through Google Cloud Vertex AI, with a React frontend and a Python/FastAPI backend.
Our goal is to lower the barrier to open-source participation, helping developers move from simply browsing issues to making meaningful contributions.
Built for Hacktoberfest Hack Day São José dos Campos 2026, with a focus on exploring the capabilities of Gemma 4 in a practical, real-world developer tool.
