About the project

SafeStep helps people turn photos of their home into practical steps to reduce fall hazards. Built for older adults, families, and caregivers, it makes home safety checks easier to understand and act on.
How it works

  1. Choose a room and upload photos of the space.
  2. Review potential hazards such as curled rugs, clutter, and cords crossing walking paths.
  3. Follow clear instructions with free fixes, estimated material costs, and links to optional supplies.
  4. Check an improvement by uploading another photo of the same area.
  5. Track progress across rooms and download a report.
SafeStep uses Gemma 4 image analysis with a room-specific checklist informed by CDC fall-prevention guidance. Conditions that photographs cannot establish, such as surface traction or grab-bar anchoring, are flagged for an in-person check.
The app is open source under the MIT license. It supports safety awareness and does not certify that a home is safe.
