GitGhost AI 👻 — Your Open-Source Contribution Companion
Making Open Source Beginner-Friendly with AI**
Inspiration
Many students and beginner developers want to contribute to open-source projects but struggle to understand GitHub issues, learn Git commands, plan code changes, and prepare Pull Requests.
GitGhost AI was created to make this journey easier, more interactive, and less intimidating.
What It Does
GitGhost AI is an AI-powered web application designed to guide beginners through their first open-source contributions.
Users can enter a public GitHub issue URL or manually describe a coding problem. The application integrates Google Gemini to provide beginner-friendly explanations and structured contribution guidance.
Key Features
- AI Issue Explainer: Explains complex GitHub issues in simple English or Hinglish.
- GitHub Issue Integration: Retrieves public GitHub issues using the GitHub REST API.
- AI Contribution Roadmap: Generates actionable, step-by-step guidance for approaching an issue.
- Difficulty Analysis: Suggests whether a task is suitable for beginner, intermediate, or advanced developers.
- Git Command Helper: Provides useful Git commands with explanations.
- AI Pull Request Assistant: Creates suggested PR titles, descriptions, and testing checklists.
- Progress Tracker: Saves contribution checklist progress locally.
- Git Learning Center: Introduces essential Git and GitHub concepts.
- Demo Mode: Provides an example issue for exploring the application.
How We Built It
GitGhost AI uses React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend, with Node.js and Express.js powering the backend.
The application integrates the Google Gemini API for AI-powered issue analysis and the GitHub REST API for retrieving public repository issues.
Browser localStorage is used to preserve contribution checklist progress.
Google Antigravity was used as an AI-assisted development environment.
Challenges
The main technical challenges included designing structured AI responses, handling external API errors, simplifying technical explanations for beginners, and connecting the frontend and backend into a consistent workflow.
Impact
GitGhost AI aims to help students move from simply browsing GitHub issues to understanding them and preparing meaningful contributions.
It supports learning, encourages participation in open-source communities, and makes the contribution process more accessible.
Future Scope
- Personalized issue recommendations
- Repository-aware code analysis
- Multilingual explanations
