Heartwise
Heartwise is a Duolingo-style app that helps patients and families understand medication labels, care visits, and insurance costs, with Hugo, an animated pixel-heart guide. Photograph a label and open-weight Gemma 4 (via the Gemini API) reads it, explains the key terms in plain language, and builds a lesson. Gemma also writes personalized “study this more” notes and answers questions in Ask Hugo, grounded in the lesson notes only, with a fixed 911/988 message for emergencies. A Nearby tab links to official care finders (HRSA health centers, Healthcare.gov local help, MI Bridges, 211, Medicare). It teaches understanding and never gives medical advice. Lesson content is a draft and has not been clinician-reviewed. The sample label and suggested questions use saved Gemma 4 responses because the hosted API can be slow. MIT licensed.
