Problem:

Nearly 25% of Detroit residents do not own a car and rely on public transit or walking. While local clinics handle primary care, seeing specialists often requires traveling to larger medical centers across the city. Unfortunately, transit delays and unreliable schedules lead to missed specialist appointments—costing patients valuable care and causing significant financial loss and scheduling inefficiencies for hospitals.

Solution:

Our project bridges public transit schedules with hospital appointment systems into a single intelligent application. The app tracks live bus schedules alongside the patient’s appointment time, giving proactive “time to leave” alerts built with safety margins to absorb transit delays or missed buses. If a delay occurs, the app immediately routes the patient to an alternative bus line so they still arrive on time.

Future Vision:

We plan to integrate direct hospital notification systems. If the app detects a patient cannot reach their appointment on time, it automatically notifies the hospital to either reschedule for a later slot that day or cancel early—reducing no-show costs for healthcare providers and saving patients unnecessary trips.
