Hack for Humanity: San Francisco

A one-day San Francisco hackathon where builders use Google Gemini and Photon to create practical solutions to local community problems.

WildSignal is an iMessage wildlife-coexistence agent for San Francisco.

The City has an encounter-interpretation problem, not an ID problem. Three mountain lions walked San Francisco in 2026 — Pacific Heights in January, the Panhandle on September 5, Outer Sunset on September 18. Coyotes already live in the Presidio. Wild parrots are the official animal. People freeze, run, or post a pin. Guidance is split across California Fish & Wildlife, SF Animal Care & Control, and Presidio ecologists. 911 is for a person in danger. There is no second civic number for the rest.

You send a photo or one sentence. Gemini reads the scene — species, behavior, dog, child, block — as structured JSON. It does not write the safety steps. A curated rule file copied from CDFW, the Presidio Trust, NPS, and SFACC returns one next move and the desk that actually takes the report. If someone shares a block, we draw a delayed neighborhood circle. Never a live pin on the animal.

Photon puts that desk in Messages: typing, tapbacks, gentle/slam effects, an “Are you safe?” poll, official rich links, a dispatch contact card, and a live App card. You do not download an app while a coyote is escorting your dog.

This is not ChatGPT and not Google. The model interprets the pixels. The City’s copy speaks.
