About the project

Ground Truth: GLOBE is an interactive educational platform and data pipeline that demonstrates the significance of GLOBE. By matching over 14,000 NASA GLOBE volunteer observations with ERA5 satellite reanalysis data across Florida, the project reveals current gaps in data collection and educates the general audience on the importance of crowdsourcing observations and citizen science.

Built using a custom Python script that aggregates spatial data into a framework-less, animated HTML map, the project visualizes the geographic gaps where human observers are needed most. It serves as an accessible tool for the general public, complementing the EMERGE curriculum. It also serves as a proof-of-concept for UF GeoDI researchers, proving that raw data volume does not equal active community engagement and highlighting exactly where future citizen science efforts must be directed. Furthermore, by putting NASA GLOBE data in front of a broader audience, the project helps generate vital public awareness for the citizen science and geospatial health research initiatives led by UF EMERGE and the UF GeoDI Lab in Florida.
